Purdue forward Mason Gillis enters NCAA Transfer Portal
The Purdue Boilermakers finished this season as national champion runner-ups after falling short to the UConn Huskies in the national championship game. Now that the year is officially over, some players will be moving on and won’t be with the program next season, one of which is forward Mason Gillis.
On Wednesday, On3 learned that the senior power forward has entered the NCAA transfer portal and will be looking for a new home for the 2024-25 season.
Gillis played high school basketball at New Castle High School in New Castle, IN, where he was a three-star prospect. According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, he was the No. 144 overall recruit in the 2019 cycle.
After sitting out his freshman season at Purdue in 2019, Gillis became a fixture in the Boilermakers rotation, earning 23 starts in 28 games during his red-shirt freshman season and 25 starts and 33 games the following season. In the two years that followed, Gillis would start less and less for Purdue but still average roughly the same amount of production, taking over as the team’s sixth man. His average minutes per game still ranged around the low 20s per contest, with him averaging 21.1 minutes per game this past season. His points per game stay close to his career average of 6.3 (6.5), as did his total rebounds (3.9) and assists (1.7) during the Boilermakers’ run to this year’s national championship game.
Gillis will head into the transfer portal with weird eligibility remaining. He leaves Purdue averaging 6.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and shooting better than 40 percent from beyond the ark and his five-year stint with the Boilermakers.
Another key contributor for Purdue is on the move
Purdue shooting guard Ethan Morton, who entered the NCAA transfer portal earlier in the day, is also looking for a new home.
