At the time of his recruitment, Ryan Browne was recruited by several schools. That included offers from several MAC schools and unofficial visits with multiple power conference schools. He also comes from a football family, with his father Jim Browne playing in the NFL. During his college career, Browne played alongside Doug Flutie at Boston College.

For the past two seasons, Purdue has been coached by Ryan Walters. He accumulated a record of 5-19. That included a difficult 2024 season where the Boilermakers went 1-11, were shutout three times, gave up more than 50 points four times, and only beat an FCS opponent. Following the year, Purdue parted ways with Walters.

At the time that Ryan Browne entered the Transfer Portal, Purdue had not yet named a new head coach. He is one of several players to enter the portal following the season for Purdue.
