A little less than a year after he committed to Rutgers, Union City (N.J.) offensive lineman JaSire Peterson has backed off his pledge to the Scarlet Knights.

Peterson is the No. 386 prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 29 interior offensive lineman and the No. 7 prospect in New Jersey.

“After talking to my family and coaches, I am writing this to announce that I am reopening my recruitment and decommitting from Rutgers University,” Peterson wrote. “It has nothing to do with Rutgers. Thank you to Coach Schiano and Coach Hoffman and the rest of the Rutgers staff for welcoming me into their family. I am was humbled by Rutgers’ offer. But it would not be fair to their coaches if I went on visits to other schools. I need to make sure I am making the right decision for my family and myself. Please respect my decision.”

Peterson does not currently have any other reported offers. But he is expected to attend Penn State’s junior day festivities this weekend, according to BlueWhite Illustrated.

The 6-foot-3, 271-pounder was Rutgers’ only commitment in the 2023 cycle.
