Rutgers announces firing of offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson
Rutgers has dismissed offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Sean Gleeson, according to a release from the school. Gleeson was in his third season in his role with the Scarlet Knights. Head coach Greg Schiano released a statement on the decision to part ways.
“This was a difficult decision, but I believe it is in the best interest of our program to make a change at offensive coordinator,” Schiano said. “I want to thank Sean for his hard work and wish he and his family all the best in their future endeavors. Nunzio Campanile will be our interim offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
The dismissal of Gleeson comes during some massive struggles for the team. Aside from a 66-7 win over Wagner, Rutgers has not scored more than 22 points in a game this season. The Scarlet Knights have lost three straight games, scoring 10, 10, and 13 points in those three games, respectively.
When it comes to scoring, Rutgers ranks 104th in the country at 22.8 points per game. In terms of total offense, Rutgers ranks 109th in the country, averaging 334 yards per game. In September, Schiano addressed the concerns of the offense and noted things had to improve.

“I think some things happened that were part of it was technical. Part of it was schematic,” Schiano said when asked about where to better the offense, according to USA Today. “And when I say ‘technical’ I mean technique. And part of it was cultural so throw all three things together, and you had kind of a perfect storm. But we are moving. We are learning from it and we are moving forward and we need to because we have an opponent with as stout a defense as there in the country.”
Gleeson got his first college coaching job in 2011 as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Fairleigh Dickinson. He has since served various roles at Princeton, Oklahoma State and most recently Rutgers.
