Koren Johnson, 2022 four-star, commits to San Diego State
Koren Johnson, a 6-foot-1 combo guard out of Seattle (Wash.) Wasatch Academy has committed to San Diego State basketball for the class of 2022, he tells On3.
Johnson is the Aztecs’ third commitment of the class. He joins four-star power forward Elijah Saunders and four-star shooting guard Miles Byrd.
Johnson ultimately chose SDSU over Washington and Arizona.
Koren Johnson on why he chose San Diego State
“I felt like Coach (Brian) Dutcher and the whole coaching staff really liked me,” Johnson said. “They didn’t sugarcoat anything, and they just kept it real with me. On my visit, it just felt like San Diego State was the place for me. It felt like home. The city is nice and I really like the team. They’re a winning school…they’re 53-7 the last two years. I wanted to go to a winning program that can develop my game and I feel like they can do that.”
Johnson said SDSU didn’t really have to give him a recruiting pitch, “they just showed love and told me what it was from the jump. They want me to come in and play the point guard.”

What does Johnson expect his role to be as a freshman?
“They’ve said I’m supposed to be coming in as a one-two, that can come off ball screens and get a bucket if we need a bucket,” Johnson said. “Also play make and find the open man…score and of course defend.”
How does Johnson describe his game?
“I’m a hard, gritty point guard that wants to win,” Johnson said. “I want to play defense, make plays, and score the basketball. I’m a true point guard, but I played combo guard most of AAU. But I can do both.”
