San Diego State’s Magoon Gwath was one of the top freshmen in the country this season. Now, he plans to enter his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal.

Mark Zeigler of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported the news of his planned entry in a story this afternoon. With that, Zeigler noted Gwath also intends to test for the 2025 NBA Draft.

“Magoon Gwath walked down the hall from the coaches’ offices and submitted paperwork to enter the transfer portal, which for college basketball officially opened Monday morning,” wrote Zeigler. “Gwath is also expected to test NBA Draft waters. But if he returns to college, as most expect, it almost certainly will not be at San Diego State.”

Gwath, a seven-footer with a seven-foot-three wingspan, spent the past two seasons as a redshirt freshman with the Aztecs. He redshirted last year before appearing and being productive in 26 games this season for SDSU.

Gwath averaged 8.5 points (50.6% FG, 37.8% 3PT), 5.2 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game this season. The blocks per game were most in the Mountain West and tied for sixth in all of the NCAA. With that, Gwath was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year, as part of the Mountain West All-Defensive Team, while also being Mountain West Freshman of the Year.

Gwath is a native of Euless, Texas as he attended Trinity High School for three years. He’d then attend Veritas Prep to finish his prep career, though, in Garden Grove, California. As a recruit, he chose San Diego State over programs like Oregon, Oregon State, USC, and Villanova.

Per the latest in On3’s Top Transfer Portal Players, Gwath is the No. 11 overall transfer in the portal. He’s also the No. 4 PF in that ranking.

Gwath is another big loss for San Diego State, who lost last week in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament to finish at 21-10 overall, during this cycle of the portal after it opened today. Nick Boyd (13.4 points, 3.9 assists, 3.9 rebounds, 1.0 steals) also entered his name in over the weekend. This comes as the Aztecs try to improve their standing in name, image, and likeness to better retain parts of their roster.

“Dutcher estimated Gwath will command ‘in excess of $1 million, maybe as high as $1.5 million or $1.7 million’ the way the market is trending this spring,” Zeigler wrote. “The MESA Foundation, SDSU’s basketball collective, has worked tirelessly to increase its NIL budget from $350,000 three years ago to north of $2 million for 2025-26, which is at or near the top of the Mountain West.”

Gwath is one of the better young prospects with what he did this season and, if nothing else, his size and length for the defensive end. Now, he’ll have the chance to get to the next level whether he plays elsewhere next season or ends up going on to the association.
