Saint Peters Peacocks head basketball coach Shaheen Holloway has finalized a deal to become the next head coach for the Seton Hall Pirates.

Holloway is a former associate head coach and graduate of Seton Hall. After leading Saint Peters on a historic NCAA tournament run that ended in the Elite Eight round, he returns to his alma mater. During that run, Holloway and the Peacocks defeated the No. 2 seed Kentucky Wildcats in the first round, no. 7 seed Murray State Racers in the second, and the No. 3 seed Purdue Boilermakers in the Sweet 16. Before that, he led the Peacocks to the MAAC conference tournament title in three straight seasons with double-digit wins in conference play.

According to college basketball analyst Jeff Goodman, Holloway is headed to Seton Hall with a long-term deal.

“Shaheen Holloway is finalizing a 6-year deal to become the head coach at Seton Hall, source told @Stadium . Holloway will take over at his alma mater after leading Saint Peter’s to a historic Elite Eight run,” wrote Goodman via Twitter.

Goodman also revealed that Saint Peter’s came with a “strong” offer to try to retain Holloway but couldn’t compete with Seton Hall’s offer.

Holloway will be introduced to the media and the entire Seton Hall community in a press conference at the Walsh Gymnasium on Thursday, March 31st. The press conference is scheduled to begin at 1:30 PM EST.

When former head coach Kevin Willard was hired in 2010, Holloway was an assistant coach on his staff for eight seasons. Saint Peter’s came calling and a few years later, Holloway is making the historic run in the NCAA Tournament. Now, he will be returning home to be the head coach of his alma mater.

Willard recently left the Pirates, opting to take the Maryland Terrapins job. Consistent as any coach inside of the Big East, Willard went to five tournaments during his time in South Orange. Holloway will be looking to continue on the tradition of appearing in the big dance.

As for who could be next for the Peacocks, Carino mentioned Halloway has been campaigning for Ryan Whalen according to Carino. The current Saint Peter’s assistant coach would keep the momentum of the program rolling, especially when the transfer portal comes calling.

“Holloway has privately and publicly endorsed Ryan Whalen as Saint Peter’s “coach in waiting.” Momentum seems to be gathering behind his right-hand man to take the torch,” Carino said. “Might also help ward off poachers of a solid core of undergrads.”
