4-star WR Derrick McFall commits to SMU Mustangs
Tyler (Texas) High four-star wide receiver Derrick McFall has committed to SMU.
He chose the Mustangs following his decommitment from UCLA on Nov. 20.
McFall is the No. 371 overall prospect and No. 60 wideout in the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 60 player in Texas.

He took an official visit to SMU at the end of September. Now, one week after backing off his pledge to the Bruins, McFall is the top-ranked commit in the Mustangs’ 2024 class.
McFall does not currently have an On3 NIL Valuation. The On3 NIL Valuation is the industry’s leading index that sets high school and college athletes’ projected annual value (PAV). The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
SMU adds high-profile pledge to 2024 class
The addition of McFall makes nine total commitments for Rhett Lashlee and the Mustangs in the 2024 cycle. The class checks in at just No. 75 in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings.
Behind McFall, Duncanville (Texas) three-star safety Ka’Davion Dotson-Walker is the next highest-ranked pledge in the class, checking in at No. 547 overall. He was one of seven players to commit to SMU in either June or July.
“After my official visit, I talked it over with my family and we felt like it was home,” Dotson-Walker told On3 of his summer decision.

“Knowing I’m staying home and playing for the Dallas brand is big,” he added. “Being able to know I’ll have family and friends at every game — it’s just different.”
Of the nine pledges in SMU’s class, six are in-state prospects. Behind McFall and Dotson-Walker, DeSoto three-star linebacker Brandon Booker, Carrollton Newman Smith three-star safety Jaylen Moses, Dallas Cedar Hill three-star cornerback Alexander Rodgers and Red Oak three-star LB Zach Smith all hail from the Lone Star State.
Mustangs already building impressive 2025 pledge list
While the 2024 class may be lacking firepower, the Mustangs have already compiled a formidable base for their 2025 pledge list. Four junior prospects have committed — all of whom are four-stars and are also from Texas.
Duncanville (Texas) quarterback Keelon Russell headlines as the No. 253 recruit and No. 21 QB in the cycle. He’s flanked by Tyler Chapel Hill running back Rickey Stewart Jr, DeSoto WR Daylon Singleton and Chapel Hill safety Demetrius Brisbon Jr. Both Stewart and Singleton are also top-300 prospects.
