Greg McElroy picks SMU as a team that could shake the ACC up
For years, SMU has been attempting to get into a power conference. Rumors flew around surrounding the Big 12 and Pac-12 but ultimately, the ACC took in the Mustangs. Finally, a home for one of college football’s potential sleeping giants and they move up from the Group of Five level.
While many might expect some SMU hardships in their new conference, ESPN’s Greg McElroy believes the Ponies have a chance to “shake up” the ACC this season. He points to SMU having better odds of winning the conference than two staple programs out there. Not what you would expect, even if an AAC Championship called the Park Cities home last season.
“I think there’s a lot of reason to believe that SMU could be in a position to really shake things up,” McElroy said. “Shockingly enough too, you look at SMU’s odds right now to win the ACC — SMU is +1700 to win the ACC. You realize that’s better odds than North Carolina and Virginia Tech?… SMU, here they are, jumping into the ACC.”
If there is any reason for McElroy to have some pause, SMU’s recent record against Power Five opponents is not the best. The Mustangs have not played up to their opponent’s level when taking a step up, something they are set to do in the ACC.
“This is a team that has struggled against Power Five programs,” McElroy said. “They’re actually just 1-9 against Power Five programs in their last 10 games. Which is pretty shocking. And now, they’re moving to a league where they have to play Power Four teams every week.”

All three SMU losses in 2023 were against P5 opponents. Boston College, Oklahoma, and TCU won by an average of just over two touchdowns, showing there still might be a gap.
Head coach Rhett Lashlee hopes that bringing back experienced players and making additions via the NCAA transfer portal will help take his program to the next level. Ten Power Four schools — eight ACC games and two nonconference against BYU + TCU — fall on the 2024 schedule.
Even if SMU is not competing for the ACC Championship, taking down a few teams would throw a wrench in the race. Florida State will make its way to the Hilltop on Sept. 28, a huge moment for the Mustangs. Louisville the following week will be a great test as well.
Opportunities are ahead for SMU as they make its way back into the world of big-time college football.
