Report: SMU expected to hire Miami offensive grad assistant Reggie Bain
The SMU Mustangs are expected to hire Miami Hurricanes offensive line grad assistant Reggie Bain, according to Gaby Urrutia and Matt Zenitz of 247sports. Bain was a former all-conference lineman for the FAU Owls. He’s also the brother of Miami star edge Reuben Bain. Reggie Bain worked with the Hurricanes the last three seasons.
As a redshirt senior for the Owls, Reggie Bain played in the Shula Bowl against FIU, where he helped clear the road for a running game that tallied 439 total rushing yards, the third most all-time for the program. He was also part of an offensive line that did not allow a sack against North Texas. As a redshirt junior for FAU, he earned second-team all-conference honors from Athlon Sports & Life. Bain was part of a unit that tallied the most rushing yards in the program’s history against Bethune Cookman.
Bain played a critical role in the record-setting offense that broke the FAU record for points with 69 and shattered the C-USA record for offensive yards (804). The Owls grinded out 368 rushing yards against Western Kentucky. He also helped guide FAU to a bowl win over Marshall, making their team bowl eligible for the first time since 2013. He finished the 2017 season earning first team C-USA honors.

Reggie Bain joining the SMU Mustangs
The SMU Mustangs enjoyed a historic 2024-2025 campaign, barely falling 34-31 to the Clemson Tigers in the ACC Championship Game. SMU made an appearance in the College Football Playoff, losing 38-10 to the Penn State Nittany Lions. That didn’t change how impressive a season the Mustangs had. They only had three losses all year, BYU (18-15), Clemson (34-31), and Penn State (38-10).
SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings really got hot in the second half of the season, throwing for over 300 yards in four games: (Clemson, Virginia, Pittsburgh, and Stanford). His stellar play was a big reason the Mustangs made it to the postseason, but he struggled mightily against the Penn State defense, which was one of the best in the country this year.
