As the fourth quarter got going during SMU’s Fenway Bowl matchup vs. Boston College, ESPN caught up with Mustang head coach Rhett Lashlee for a few quick words.

In a close contest played amid a downpour in frigid Boston, MA, SMU narrowly led Boston College 14-10 to start the period, but Lashlee stated that he’s seen a flurry of errors from his group.

“Yeah, we’ve done a lot of things in the first three quarters to lose the football game. We’ve had two kicks blocked, we’ve dropped touchdowns. We’ve just been real sloppy. We’re fortunate to have the lead, though,” he said.

However, just after his interview, Lashlee watched as BC quarterback Thomas Castellanos punched in the go-ahead touchdown early in the final period.

But that’s not surprise, because Lashlee noted that his team has “got to find a way to grind through and finish it” against a solid Eagles team.

In fact, to finish his comments, Lashlee noted that Boston College is a fierce opponent and there’s plenty of battle left for these clubs to duke it out.

“We got a good football team. You know, they’re playing a great game too, it’s a heck of a football game. We’ll play for a quarter and see who can win it.”

Prior to the game, Rhett Lashlee had very high praise for Boston College, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

“Really big, physical offensive line. They love to run the ball and then throw shots deep. They run it well enough, they gain two, three, four yards,” Lashlee said last week. “They very rarely get stopped for no gain or go backwards. So, it’s hard to get negative plays and get them off schedule.”

Of course, he also held hight praise for BC quarterback Thomas Castellanos, who is performing quite well in the game.

“The quarterback transferred from Central Florida. Remember him coming out of high school, I believe out of South Georgia. He’s really electric. He’s got a big arm, he can make throws, but boy, he scares you running the football. Not only on design runs, just dropping back and creating. So, that’s the concern for our defense.”

Castellanos was the one to strike on the lead-taking touchdown with his legs, which is where he’s killed the Mustangs all day long. Obviously with the rain and sludge at Fenway today, pounding the rock was going to be of great importance, and it’s BC who has been slightly better in that department.
