Rhett Lashlee reacts to Nick Saban's praise of Kevin Jennings on ESPN College GameDay
SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings led the Mustangs to a sixth straight win on Saturday with an impressive 48-25 win over No. 18 Pitt to remain undefeated in ACC play amid their first season in the conference. Doing so after receiving some major praise from who most regard as the greatest college football coach of all time.
Nick Saban called Jennings the most underrated player in the country on Saturday morning during ESPN’s College GameDay. Praise that SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee reacted to on Saturday following his team’s big win over the Panthers.
“So I didn’t see it, but then I was told about it, and then I guess our media team saw it and cut it out and put it (out). I think he’s the greatest coach to ever do, it looks like he knows what he’s talking about to me the way Kevin played tonight,” Lashlee said.
Jennings threw for 306 yards and two touchdown passes on Saturday as he continues to play winning football for the Mustangs. Throwing for 1,900 yards and 12 touchdowns along with 317 rushing yards and three scores on the ground in his first full season as a starter.
But when it comes to being underrated, Lashlee made it clear that he does not mind his SMU squad going under the radar.
“I think we’re just fine nobody talking about us, we know how good Kevin is. We don’t need anybody to tell us, neither does Kevin. It’s nice to be recognized, our team, I think our defense doesn’t get talked about enough. But I also don’t care,” Lashlee explained. “Because I’m proud of them, I’m proud of our staff.”

“Pretty cool though,” he admitted. “For Nick Saban to say about you, if you’re Kevin, hey I think this is maybe most underrated player in the country and then for him to go out and make him look good.”
SMU is currently tied with Miami at the top of the ACC standings, slowly but surely becoming less and less underrated as they continue to shine. Which naturally comes with Saban’s famous rat poison, which he provided for the Mustangs personally this weekend.
“We’ll see if we find a new way to repackage it. We definitely gotta worry about it now, there’s plenty of rap poison out there for us,” Lashlee concluded.
Jennings and the Mustangs control their own postseason destiny moving forward with three games remaining the the regular season. Resting this week thanks to a bye before hosting Boston College next Saturday.
