According to On3’s Pete Nakos, SMU EDGE Omari Abor has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Abor spent just one season on the Hilltop, beginning his career with Ohio State. Now, he is going through the transfer process for the second time in his career.

Abor played in two games during his time with SMU, both at the beginning of the 2024 season. Houston Christian and TCU got to see the pass rusher, having a tackle in each contest. No other stats were recorded by Abor as he did not appear in SMU’s next nine games.

Ohio State originally won Abor’s signature, a huge recruiting win for Ryan Day at the time. Abor played high school football at Duncanville (TX), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 79 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Entering the portal and signing with SMU was considered a homecoming for Abor. Unfortunately, things have not quite worked out. The process for finding a third school in as many years will now begin although the Mustangs still have competitive games remaining on the schedule.

SMU is set to play in the College Football Playoff on Saturday, facing Penn State in a historic matchup for the program. Even so, multiple players have decided to leave and enter their names into the transfer portal. Head coach Rhett Lashlee spoke on the matter with the media on Tuesday.

“The real easy thing is you don’t have a transfer portal in December,” Lashlee said. “That’s the real easy answer, and it solves all the problems. Why in the world would we put kids in a position where they’ve got to decide, do I transfer or play in the playoff? Do I transfer or play my bowl game? Scholastically, it doesn’t make sense either, because your years end in May, not in December.”

Abor wound up being one of those players who had a decision to make. Now in the portal, he will not be with SMU for the trip to Happy Valley, and will begin to look for his next stop.
