SMU quarterback Tyler Aronson is planning to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to his agents via ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. On3’s Pete Nakos confirmed the Mustangs’ quarterback’s decision.

“SMU quarterback Tyler Aronson is set to enter the transfer portal, according to his agents. The Florida native was an ESPN 3-star recruit in the 2024 class,” Rittenberg posted on X. “He did not appear in any games last fall for the Mustangs.”

As a member of the Class of 2024, Aronson was a three-star recruit out of Vero Beach (North Palm Beach, FL)according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 138 overall prospect in the state, the No. 62 quarterback in the class and the No. 1015 overall prospect in the class.

He did not appear in any games for SMU last season, as the Mustangs went 11-3 this year and played for both the ACC title and in the College Football Playoff. However, Aronson was a four-year varsity starter at quarterback in high school, leading his team to the playoffs all four seasons. He also threw for over 7,000 yards during high-school career.

When he chose SMU, he joined the Mustangs over Appalachian State, Eastern Kentucky, Florida A&M and Florida Atlantic. We’ll see if any of those programs come calling this time around.

Alas, the quarterback room for SMU got a facelift over the offseason, as former Wisconsin and Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke committed to the Mustangs in January. This will be the final year of eligibility for Van Dyke, as he goes back to the ACC.

Van Dyke began his career at Miami in 2020, spending four years with the program. He transferred to Wisconsin ahead of the 2024 season. However, he only played in three games this year due to suffering a season-ending injury against Alabama. His career-best season came in 2021, his second with the Hurricanes.

Van Dyke threw for 422 yards, one touchdown, zero interceptions and a 63.2% completion percentage this season. Over the course of his career, Van Dyke has 7,891 yards, 55 touchdowns, 23 interceptions and a 63.7% completion percentage.

As a member of the Class of 2020, Van Dyke was a four-star recruit out of Glastonbury (Conn.) Suffield Academy, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 2 overall prospect in the state, the No. 19 quarterback in the class and the No. 263 overall prospect in the class.
