SMU WR Jamarion Carroll plans to enter NCAA Transfer Portal

SMU wide receiver Jamarion Carroll plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. On Tuesday, Carroll announced his decision with a statement on social media.
“I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity to play the game I’ve loved my entire life,” Carroll wrote. “I want to sincerely thank my coaches, trainers and learning specialists for their support both on the field and off. Your guidance in football, academics, and life has meant the world to me.
“With that being said, after much consideration, I’ve decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal with three years of eligibility remaining. I’m excited for the next chapter of my journey and fully committed to reaching my full potential.”
Carroll made four appearances in the 2024 campaign for the Mustangs. He played in three games during his true freshman season in 2023 before ultimately redshirting. He has one career catch for seven yards.
Jamarion Carroll played high school football at Hirschi (TX), where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 1,085 overall player and No. 167 wide receiver in the 2023 recruiting class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
He will be just the fourth SMU player to enter the transfer portal this offseason. In turn, the Mustangs have added 16 players via the NCAA Transfer Portal.
SMU is a blossoming program after head coach Rhett Lashlee led the team to an appearance in the College Football Playoff last season. It was SMU’s first year in the ACC, and it narrowly lost the conference championship game 34-31 to Clemson.

The success story was validation for Lashlee. In an interview with On3 in April, Lashlee discussed how the standout campaign will affect the program’s future.
“People in our industry felt like, as soon as we moved to the ACC, a lot of people used the word sleeping giant,” Lashlee said. “They knew we had the potential to be a big-time player and make an impact. What we were able to do in a short amount of time just kind of validates that to those who knew it, and maybe gets the attention of others who wouldn’t have caught that.
“… What we did last year was huge, but we have to stack quality years. And for us, we don’t have to make the playoffs every year, win a championship every year, to validate that we’re a national program and on the biggest stage and we belong, but we do have to put ourselves to be able to compete and contend and try to put ourselves in contention most years. So every year, people will go, ‘That’s a top 25 team, and that’s a team that should contend for the ACC title.’”
