Former Texas Longhorns wide receiver Joshua Moore has decided to switch up his transfer destination. After originally committing to Texas Tech, Moore changed up his mind and announced he would be heading to play for the SMU Mustangs.

“It’s official, I’m headed to the 214,” Moore said via Twitter on Monday night.

Moore came into the 2021 season as the leading returning receiver for Texas and was waiting to explode under new head coach Steve Sarkisian. He was able to haul in 24 catches for 265 receiving yards and three touchdown catches on the year.

Moore decided to enter the transfer portal on Nov. 8, just two days after a blowout loss to Iowa State on the road. The wide receiver appeared in 24 games during his four seasons in Austin.

In On3’s transfer portal rankings, Moore ranked as the No. 16 wide receiver in the cycle. However, he is the highest-rated transfer at the position to be heading to a Group of Five program.

Moore was a top 100 recruit coming out of high school, being ranked the No. 96 overall prospect in the On3 Consensus. He was the No. 16 player at the wide receiver position and No. 9 within the state of Texas. Now, Moore will be joining new head coach Rhett Lashlee in Dallas.

Joshua Moore to be joined by Rice recruiting director at SMU

SMU has been on the wrong end of departures and transfers this season between them and their rivals. But on Monday the Mustangs got one over on one of their regional rivals.

SMU will hire the Rice Owls recruiting director Alex Brown to become the program’s director of scouting. Brown confirmed the move on his personal Twitter account. The former Owl also pinned a letter to Rice in the post.

“Starting off, I would like to thank coach Bloomgren for believing in me as a person and professional. You opened up your home to me, my recruiting staff and our entire team at rice,” wrote Brown. “You gave me a chance to grow, instill confidence and me daily and I cannot thank you enough for the friendship we developed over the last three years.”

New SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee has been on a mission to fill his coaching staff since joining the ptrgram. Last week alone he hired Scott Slutak formally of the Miami Hurricanes to be the program’s chief operating officer. Lashlee also hired former Virginia Cavaliers strength and conditioning coach Shawn Griswold to the same position with SMU.
