Bam Martin-Scott reveals how he hurt his hamstring
The South Carolina Gamecocks and head coach Shane Beamer are expecting a lot out of graduate linebacker Bam Martin-Scott this season. However, during the Gamecocks fall camp, Martin-Scott hasn’t been 100% and has been seen on the sideline being attended to at various times.
The South Carolina linebacker is limited in practice currently due to a hamstring injury. Martin-Scott recently revealed that information during a press conference, along with how he suffered the injury setback in the first place.
“Well, I was trying to get some extra work in and kind of was running a little too much; more than I should have,” said Martin-Scott.
The six-foot-two, 230-lb linebacker is entering his fourth year in the South Carolina football program. His past two seasons were the most active for Martin-Scott as a Gamecock. In those 23 games, he recorded 54 total tackles, 37 solo, five tackles for loss, two sacks, a forced fumble, and an interception that was returned for 37 yards on South Carolina’s 50-10 victory over South Carolina State during the 2022 season.
While Martin-Scott has been limited in practice, the injury does not appear to have a significant impact on his availability during the regular season, which is significant. South Carolina would like nothing more than to bounce back from last year’s 5-7 finish for the Gamecocks failed to qualify for a bowl game for the first time under Beamer’s leadership.

Beamer identifies the position battles he’s eyeing during camp
Speaking of the South Carolina head coach, Beamer spoke about all the different competitions in fall camp in Columbia, SC. When addressing the topic, Beamer admitted there were just too many for the coaches right now for him to single out just one.
“I think there’s a lot. I’m not trying to dodge the question but I really do believe there’s multiple,” said Beamer. “We met as a staff this morning. I talked about all the things that really excite me about this team, which there’s a lot. But then all of the things that are – I don’t want to say concerns but are questions that we have to answer. There’s multiple.”
With that many ongoing for South Carolina, Beamer just started listing them off. It began with the kicking job as well as at every level of their defense in some sense.
“Who the kicker is going to be, you know, is something that we have to figure out,” said Beamer.
“I’m going to basically go through every position. I’m sorry,” Beamer prefaced. “Essentially, okay, if O’Donnell Fortune is coming into the season as one starting corner, what does that opposite corner battle look like? Nick Emmanwori and DQ Smith come into the preseason as our two starting safeties. What does the depth look like behind those guys? How is this linebacker rotation going to shake out? You guys have heard me say it – we basically had a three-man rotation last year. I feel confident saying that we could have as much as a seven, eight-man rotation as far as guys if they continue to come along that I feel like can help us win football games. How does that shake out? Same thing – we feel good about the D-line group but what’s the rotation there?”
