South Carolina senior deputy athletics director Chance Miller is leaving the university to become the next AD at Coastal Carolina, the Chanticleers announced Thursday. He spent the last 11 years at USC, including the last five as senior deputy AD.

Miller – considered a rising star in the industry – initially joined South Carolina in the compliance office in 2013, and that came after four years working for the NCAA on its enforcement staff. After six years in compliance, Miller moved to senior deputy athletics director, where he served as senior associate general counsel and served as the sport administrator for football as well as the swimming and diving programs.

One of Miller’s duties at South Carolina was spearheading the school’s NIL efforts and fundraising. He helped raise $3 million in NIL initiatives while building out education and helping a collective with tax, marketing and branding assistance to assist Gamecocks athletes. As the state drafted its NIL law, Miller played a role in drafting the bill.

“I am incredibly excited and honored to have been named the vice president for intercollegiate athletics and University recreation at Coastal Carolina University,” Miller said in a statement. “I want to thank President Benson and the Coastal Carolina board of trustees for their trust and confidence in my ability to lead our athletic department to new heights. I also appreciate the search committee for their dedicated efforts throughout the interview process.

“I am eager to work with our talented coaches, dedicated staff, passionate alumni, and enthusiastic fans. My family and I are thrilled to join the vibrant CCU community. With Coastal’s history of success, solid foundation, and the dynamic growth of both the University and the surrounding community, this is truly an ideal place for us. We are ready and excited to begin this journey together with the Teal Nation. Go Chants!”

Miller got his law degree from New York Law School in 2008 after graduating from Tennessee with his bachelor’s degree in 2004. At CCU, he will also serve on President Michael Benson’s cabinet and executive council.

“Chance Miller is the right fit and a proven leader with a vision to enhance our championship-caliber athletics program,” Benson said in a statement. “His 10-plus years of progressive experience at USC and tenure at the NCAA will be invaluable as we build upon the momentum Chanticleer Athletics is experiencing. I am delighted to welcome Chance to Teal Nation.”
