Without many options by way of quarterback for the 2021 edition of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, South Carolina turned to quarterback-turned-receiver Dakereon Joyner to be the spot quarterback for stretches of the game. It turned out to be a fruitful decision, as Joyner went 9-for-9 passing for 160 yards and a touchdown while rushing 10 times for 64 more yards.

And it’s a plan that has inspired South Carolina and the coaches to find a wrinkle for Joyner in the upcoming Gator Bowl matchup against Notre Dame. It’s one Joyner is naturally excited about.

“It was definitely exciting. I’m still just as excited now,” Joyner said. “I feel the same way as I felt last year around this time and I told one of my teammates. I said ‘I got that same feeling, man.’ So, I don’t know. I’m gonna let God take care of the rest but I’m excited. My team, we’re ready to ball man, make another statement.”

What the special role for Joyner is, exactly, remains to be seen. And he wasn’t going to just willingly reveal it.

He did, however, assure everyone that he is ready to pull it off.

“I can’t give all the juice, but I’m prepared and I’m ready for everything that’s gonna come,” Joyner said. “Every situation I’m going to be put in, I’m ready for it, I’m ready to ball.”

Luke Doty ‘fired up’ about NCAA waiver to play in bowl game

The NCAA recently announced a waiver that would allow players to play in a fifth game, so long as it’s after December 15th, without burning their redshirt. This was in response to depth issues on rosters because of players opting out and transferring. For some, like South Carolina’s Luke Doty, this is an excellent opportunity.

Doty explained to reporters how Shane Beamer told him he was good to play in the game and that he’s excited for this opportunity.

“I was pretty fired up about it and, you know, Coach Beamer texted me sometime that night, whenever it came out,” Doty said. “A screenshot of whatever he got that said it had been approved and I’m pretty excited about it.”

For Doty, this is an opportunity that he’s going to take, regardless of how big or small his role will be in the game.

“Any opportunity I get, I’m gonna take it,” Doty said. “So, I don’t know what my role will be if there will be any, but whatever it is, whatever I got to do, I’m always up for it. So, I’m just ready to have some fun out there.”
