Dawn Staley and the No. 1 seed South Carolina Gamecocks certainly had some anxious moments in their win over the No. 9 seed Indiana Hoosiers in their NCAA Tournament matchup, but they eventually took care of business, advancing to the Sweet 16. The Gamecocks actually trailed at halftime, but they found their footing and marched onward. In doing so, they once again landed another bonus for head coach Dawn Staley.

According to Steve Berkowitz of USA Today, Staley landed a $25,000 bonus as the Gamecocks once again advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. She now has $180,000 in bonuses so far.

Against Indiana, South Carolina struggled in the first half, but managed to battle back and prevail victorious, 64-53. Chloe Kitts (10 points), Sania Feagin (10 points), and Bree Hall all finished with (11 points). The Gamecocks rallied after they outscored the Hoosiers 26-14 in the third quarter.

South Carolina was dominant on the glass, outrebounding Indiana 37-27. Indiana got a balanced scoring effort, with four different players pumping in double digits.

Dawn Staley has built a remarkable dynasty

Staley has built South Carolina women’s basketball into one of the nation’s most dominant programs over the years, leading them to six Final Fours in the last nine NCAA Tournaments (2015, 2017, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024). During her 16 seasons there, she’s already brought in three national championships (2017 and 2022) and will aim for her fourth in the 2025 NCAA Tournament.

During her college basketball playing career, Staley was one of the greatest players in Virginia women’s basketball history during her time with the Cavaliers. She had her jersey retired. Once she wrapped up her career there, she scored more than 2,000 points, had more than 700 rebounds, more than 700 assists, and more than 400 steals, becoming the only women’s basketball player in ACC history to accomplish the feat. In April of 2008, she was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
