Dowell Loggains announces former Alabama coach Mike Shula joined South Carolina staff as analyst
The South Carolina Gamecocks recently added Mike Shula to the team’s staff as an analyst. New offensive coordinator, Dowell Loggains, announced the hiring during an appearance on Inside The Gamecocks.
Mike Shula is best known for his time as the head coach at Alabama. He held that role between 2003 and 2006, compiling a 26-23 record there.
Throughout his career, Shula has consistently worked on the offensive side of the ball, as both a position coach and as an offensive coordinator in the NFL. In particular, he has worked extensively with professional quarterbacks in recent seasons.
Since parting ways with Alabama, Shula has been the quarterbacks coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, New York Giants, and Denver Broncos. He was also an offensive coordinator for Carolina and New York. Most recently, he was an offensive analyst for the Buffalo Bills before taking the analyst job at South Carolina.
During that time, he coached quarterbacks like Cam Newton, Eli Manning, and Josh Allen. That experience at the quarterback position, in particular, is expected to go a long way for a South Carolina team that is transitioning out of the Spencer Rattler era.

Michigan prepared to offer No. 1 recruit $10.5M over 4 years
In his new role with South Carolina, Mike Shula is going to be helping Dowell Loggains run the Gamecocks’ offense. It’s his first season with the program after previously being the tight ends coach at Arkansas. He also has experience as an NFL offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Mike Shula is the son of head coach Don Shula, who is still the winningest coach in the history of the NFL, winning 328 games, including the playoffs, between 1963 and 1995 with the Baltimore Colts and the Miami Dolphins.
During Shula’s Alabama tenure, the Crimson Tide struggled to find consistent success, only finishing with a winning record once in his four seasons. He also had two seasons where the Crimson Tide finished with a .500 record and another where they had a losing record.
Initially, Shula took over at Alabama in May of 2003, when Mike Price was fired. At that time, the program was struggling thanks to NCAA sanctions and the scandal that led to Price being fired. That, along with the shortened offseason for Shula, led to early issues in his tenure. Then, after showing improvement in 2005, the Crimson Tide took a step back in 2006 and fired Shula following the season.
South Carolina will play at Alabama during the 2024 season.
