Ethan Petry calls freshman season at South Carolina the ‘greatest year of my life’
As a freshman at South Carolina, Ethan Petry burst onto the scene for the Gamecocks. It was a phenomenal season that ended in the Super Regional, when South Carolina fell to the Florida Gators.
After the season was over, Petry was able to reflect and came to the conclusion that his freshman year at South Carolina was the greatest of his life.
“It was probably one of the greatest experiences of my life,” Ethan Petry said. “I mean, I met one of my best friends and all of my best friends now, and they’re great kids.”
As Petry explained, he made great friendships with a lot of the older players on the South Carolina team. That included Jack Mahoney, who was sitting next to him and Petry got emotional while speaking about the impact that those players had on him this year.
“I made a great friendship with Jack, and he’s been a great mentor for me. Same with Braylen Wimmer and Will McGillis and Caleb Denny. They’re great kids and it sucks to see them leave, but just, it’s the way life goes.”
This season, Ethan Petry hit 23 home runs to go with 75 RBIs and a .376 batting average. He also slugged at a .733 rate and had .417 on base percentage.
Along with his massive offensive numbers, Petry also earned numerous awards and acknowledgements throughout the season. That included being named SEC Freshman of the Week multiple times, as well as SEC Player of the Week.

Ethan Petry on handling the ups and downs
Baseball is a game that is going to humble players. That’s especially true for a young player who is going up against tough competition in the SEC.
That was exactly the case for Ethan Petry during his freshman season at South Carolina. He has since explained how he handled those ups and downs.
“What I learned when I was little was just stay the course and stay a happy medium,” Petry said. “You never want to be too high. You never want to be too low. Just stay medium if you’re doing bad, and stay medium even if you’re doing good.”
