WATCH: Former South Carolina baseball star Jonah Bride hits first MLB home run
In June, Jonah Bride made his Major League Baseball debut. Friday night, the former South Carolina star reached another milestone in his career.
Bride, a third baseman for the Oakland Athletics, hit his first MLB home run off New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole to get the A’s on the board. Oakland ended up scoring a run in the ninth inning, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to the Yankees 3-2.
Still, it was quite a moment for Bride, who was a 23rd-round pick of the A’s in the 2018 MLB Amateur Draft.

During his time at South Carolina, Bride was ranked as the No. 50 prospect in college baseball, according to D1Baseball. As a senior in 2018, he was one of two players to start all 63 games for the Gamecocks, finishing the year with a .301 batting average to go with 12 doubles, four home runs and 31 RBI. In fact, he had a 30-game reached base streak from February to April of that season.

For his career, he helped South Carolina to two Super Regional appearances and did serious work in the field with a 95.7% career fielding percentage. That cemented him as one of the best players the Gamecocks have seen over the last decade.
Prior to his call-up to the big leagues, Bride put together an impressive minor league stat line. He had a .283 batting average, a .824 OPS and 170 RBI in 199 career minor league at-bats before he made his way to Oakland.
Since making his debut for the A’s, Bride has appeared in 36 games and has a .222 average in that time. The A’s are having a rough year, though, taking a 46-81 record into their next game against the Yankees on Saturday.
