Shane Beamer jokingly calls out Sam Pittman when discussing which SEC coach he would like to fight
A commonly asked question, especially around the SEC, is which one of their colleagues would coaches enjoy getting into a fight with. Of course, these are always done in jest and just an opportunity to have some fun. Even so, there might be a little bit of truth to it, at least to South Carolina‘s Shane Beamer.
Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman was the answer for Beamer, citing multiple different reasons. Pittman has been a long-time offensive line coach but Beamer believes he will be able to overcome the physicality with quickness. Plus, having the age advantage definitely helps.
“From a quickness standpoint, an agility standpoint, I could probably take Sam,” Beamer said on the Bussin With The Boys podcast. “He may beat me in a beer-drinking contest or something like that, I’m sure. Sam and I were neighbors at (Georgia). And he’s a little bit older than me.”
Beamer is of course kidding and also spoke on his friendship with Pittman. The two lived near each other in Athens when working for Kirby Smart. Both were on the offensive staff, with Beamer being the tight ends coach and special teams coordinator, while Pittman was the offensive line coach.
A beer-drinking competition might bring just as much intrigue but Beamer admits Pittman would have better competitors. Beamer is not afraid to back himself when discussing a fight though. Any head coach is going to have confidence and even more so when discussing long-time friends within the business.

Shane Beamer, Sam Pittman competitors on and off the field
Both Beamer and Pittman are relatively new head coaches. Success has come quickly as well, with both exceeding expectations early in their career. Now, you could categorize both of them as programs ready to break out in the SEC with a chance to be solid once again in 2023.
While the talk of fighting is fun, the duo would likely rather be competing on the field against one another instead. We got the first taste of Arkansas-South Carolina with the head coaches in charge this past season, with the Razorbacks coming out victorious in Columbia.
Advantage Pittman, currently sitting with a 1-0 record against his fellow former Georgia staffer. And with how the SEC schedule will be set up beginning in the 2024 season, we will get a ton more head-to-head matchups between the two.
