The upset of the season arguably took place on Saturday, with South Carolina demolishing Tennessee at home. From start to finish, the Gamecocks were able to handle the Vols and got a signature win under head coach Shane Beamer.

Beamer spoke with ESPN’s Holly Rowe after the game as fans stormed the field. He talked about how proud he was of his players and especially his seniors. He then took some time to pat himself on the back, sending a sort of ‘I told you so’ message to everyone in college football.

“We got a resilient bunch,” Beamer said. “I love these kids. They work their butt off and no matter what happens every Saturday, they come back to work every Sunday and have a better week of practice than they had the week before. I’m so happy for them, so happy for our seniors. I mean, I’ve been telling people we have a good football team and we sure as hell showed it tonight.”

Heading into the halftime break, Beamer discussed having to win one on one battles in the second half. He said if they were going to hold on to upset Tennessee, those would be the key.

Beamer said that’s exactly what happened over the final 30 minutes. It was the plan heading into the game and was executed well by South Carolina.

“We got a tough bunch,” said Beamer. “I just love coaching them. We told them before the game that this game is about competition. There is going to be a bunch of one on one battles all over the field and we got to win our share. And we did.”

Shame Beamer getting the ball rolling at South Carolina

At the end of his interview, Beamer took some time to shout out a couple of people.

First, he complimented the play of his quarterback. Spencer Rattler looked like the five-star prospect he was coming out of high school, balling all night. He also reflected on the program’s historic win over Alabama back in 2010.

But then, he said things are “just getting started” for South Carolina. These types of wins can jump-start programs to the next level, as Beamer thinks Saturday night was exactly that.

“Spencer Rattler — unbelievable,” Beamer said. “So happy for him. I told Kirk and Chris yesterday, the last time I was in this stadium with them was when we beat Alabama when they were No. 1 in the country in 2010. So, y’all got to keep coming back. But this is what this place can be and we’re just getting started here at Carolina.”
