South Carolina guard Jamarii Thomas enters NCAA transfer portal

South Carolina guard Jamarii Thomas entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Pete Nakos has learned. He started his college career at UNC-Wilmington and Norfolk State.
The 2024-25 season was Thomas’ first in South Carolina, and he turned in impressive numbers as a senior. He averaged 13.2 points, which was second on the Gamecocks’ roster, while also adding 3.0 assists and 1.3 steals per game.
Prior to his time at South Carolina, Thomas put together a standout junior year at Norfolk State. He averaged 16.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists. He will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Jamarii Thomas played high school basketball at Burlington (N.C.) The Burlington School before arriving at UNC-Wilmington. He played two years with the program before making his way to Norfolk State in 2023 and South Carolina in 2024.
Thomas is the fifth South Carolina player to enter the portal since the window opened last week, joining teammates Nick Pringle and Zachary Davis, among others. The Gamecocks have also been active in the transfer market, led by former North Dakota guard Treysen Eaglestaff – the No. 42 overall player in the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings.
One of the more intriguing additions, though, is guard Meechie Johnson. He previously played at South Carolina in 2022-23 after starting his career at Ohio State. Johnson returned to the Buckeyes this past season and is now gearing up to once again suit up for the Gamecocks in 2025-26 for his final year of eligibility.

Johnson acknowledged his unique journey and is believed to be the first player to play for multiple schools multiple times. However, he cited his faith guiding him through his career.
“Lol i get it … Going back to the same 2 schools twice,” Johnson wrote on X. “This isn’t what i imagined nor thought my career would be like but I serve a perfect merciful and graceful god and i know this is his journey for me. #UnheardOf.”
Johnson started the first 10 games of the 2024-25 season at Ohio State before taking a leave of absence due to “personal matters.” He didn’t play again for the Buckeyes.
He started in all 10 of his appearances for the Buckeyes this season. Johnson averaged 9.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 28.9 minutes per game while shooting 35.6% from the field and 35.7% from beyond the arc.
