LaNorris Sellers explains his mindset for South Carolina quarterback battle
The South Carolina quarterback competition rages on, with head coach Shane Beamer not ready to name a starter following the spring game. However, LaNorris Sellers is the favorite to wind up as the winner, outperforming Robby Ashford over the weekend. Even so, Beamer will take the battle into the summer and eventually name a starter ahead of the season opener vs. Old Dominion.
Sellers was asked about his mindset throughout the process, explaining how he is blocking out all outside noise. Taking things day by day is his main focus, very standard for guys competing for such an important role. At least at the podium, Sellers has the right attitude.
“I think it’s a competition,” Sellers said. “I just really got to worry about me, do my job, and make sure everything is right with me. Not worry about everything else like the outside talk. So, just focus on me and getting better every day.”
Ashford heavily struggled during the South Carolina spring game, completing just one pass for 14 yards. He was not able to run outside of the pocket either, having a noncontact jersey on. Using his feet is a big part of Ashford’s game dating back to his time at Auburn.
Sellers was different, though. Beamer let him go live and the results were positive. Finishing with 70 passing yards on nine of 11 passing, Sellers also ran for 38 yards and a touchdown. For one half of a spring game, quite impressive.
“I think I did pretty good,” Sellers said. “We moved the ball, we scored, kept the ball safe. So, that’s the most important thing.”

Beamer was impressed with the quarterback’s spring game performance too, even if he has not been declared the winner yet.
“I thought Sellers was really, really good,” Beamer said. “He has been good all spring. I thought he looked very poised, very efficient… I thought he did a really good job of operating the offense.”
A big season is ahead of South Carolina, needing to get back to winning ways in Beamers’ fourth season in charge. Spencer Rattler carried the offense for the last two seasons but it’s a new era for the Gamecocks in Columbia.
Sellers is likely hoping he is the guy to lead the program for the 2024 season. And while he has not officially won the job yet, his mindset seems to be in the right place.
