After Arkansas picked up a close 65-63 victory over South Carolina, Gamecocks guard Meechie Johnson said he felt that his team was close to breaking its seven-game losing streak.

It was a close back-and-forth contest with South Carolina having multiple leads within the final few minutes of the game. But as has happened multiple times this season, the Gamecocks have not been able to close out game.

“You definitely want to continue to build of games like this,” Johnson said after the game. “Again, two weeks ago, they was a top 15 team in the country. We just almost beat them. You look at it like, we’re not too far from where we’re supposed to be. But again, we just got to turn our corner and close out games like that. This is something that we build off of and get back to the lab and see what we can do better to close out games.”

Johnson and Josh Gray led the Gamecocks with 20 points each.

Meechie Johnson says South Carolina will get a win soon to turn the corner

The last win for Meechie Johnson and South Carolina came on Jan. 10 against Kentucky. It was one of Johnson’s best games of the season as he scored 26 points on 9 of 16 from the field to go along with six rebounds and six assists.

Since then, the team has had some blowout losses but the Gamecocks also lost some close games, including an overtime loss to Georgia.

“It’s tough — I’m gonna tell you why,” Johnson said. “Because in my eyes since we started conference play, the first game versus Vandy, up eight with four minutes to go. Who else we play?..I just feel like it’s a lot of wins that we we had. We could have four or five wins right now and it’s tough when you look after the game be like man. We have struggled some games too where it was 20, 30 Point blowouts but you look at games like this and its just like Man, we could be a good team. It’s hard, bro. It’s hard when you want to piece it all together and you take a tough loss. But we got a great coaching staff, great people in the locker room. I think we’re gonna turn the corner at some point.”
