Williams-Brice Stadium is once again rocking, with South Carolina back on the football field. Being under the lights makes the occasion that much better — even if it’s a spring game. Fans have the opportunity to see quarterback Spencer Rattler back out there again as the Gamecocks prepare for the 2023 season.

Rattler did not get too much playing time but was able to throw a touchdown pass. Head coach Shane Beamer then decided to pull his starting quarterback and give him the night off. While Rattler might have wanted some more reps, he said there’s not too much to complain about.

“It felt really good,” Rattler said. “It feels good to be back out in front of these fans. Loving our new offense. Good first drive. Go down, get a touchdown, can’t complain.”

New offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains is soft launching with the program, getting to call plays. Rattler is enjoying his relationship with Loggains, especially as the quarterbacks coach. The duo seems to be working more as a partnership than how most coaches approach things.

“He’s a great coach,” Rattler said. “We look at it as a partnership, not a coach, player thing. He teaches all of us quarterbacks great things and we apply it to the field and just keep learning and learning. Progessing each day.”

One connection Loggains will want to dial up a ton this season is Rattler to Knox. Arkansas transfer tight end Trey Knox was on the receiving end of Rattler’s touchdown pass early on Saturday night. The quarterback has loved the connection throughout spring practice.

“Super excited,” Rattler said. “He’s had a great spring. He’s shown he can make many plays out here. I missed him on one but got a touchdown for him. So, I’m happy for him.”

As mentioned, Rattler did not see too much of the field in South Carolina’s spring game. However, there were still some goals for his short playing time. Rattler wanted to get a touchdown throw under his belt and thankfully, can check that off the list.

“I just want to come out here, play efficient,” Rattler said. “Play fast. Communicate well. Honestly, just score a touchdown before I got out… We knew we weren’t going to get as many reps tonight with six quarterbacks but I wanted to score at least one.”

Rattler will be back on the field come this fall, with high expectations unfolding in front of our eyes for South Carolina. The quarterback is a big reason why, choosing to return to college instead of declaring for the NFL Draft.

In what should be his last spring game, Rattler will be able to take home a small memory.
