The South Carolina Gamecocks are preparing for a significant Week 2 matchup against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Both teams were pleasant surprises in 2021, outplaying expectations. Now the two must get ready for an early SEC conference matchup with significant implications. The preparation approach the Gamecocks are taking is a precise and focused one. Their quarterback Spencer Rattler recently said their preparation was akin to a sniper’s work on the battlefield.

“Just knowing to take what they give you. Play our offense; play our scheme. And then, when that play’s there; when that shots there, take a shot,” said Rattler. “It’s gotta be precise aggression. It’s kind of like referring to a sniper. You know what I’m saying; you gotta have that precise aggression. And when your shot’s there, take it.

This past Saturday, the Gamecocks kicked off their 2022 season at home against Georgia State. South Carolina did exactly what they were supposed to do and defended their home field, winning 35-14. Rattler had a bit of a shaky start to his South Carolina career, throwing two interceptions in the game. He would finish the day completing 23 of his 37 pass attempts for 227 yards and one touchdown.

Saturday’s matchup against Arkansas will go a long way toward showing the South Carolina faithful just what kind of team they have this year. But for them to have a chance to upset the Razorbacks, Rattler must be pinpoint and precise with his accuracy, a la, a sniper on the field.

Shane Beamer discusses offensive performance for South Carolina

Head coach Shane Beamer assessed his team’s offensive performance after the game, saying everyone has to improve. He listed most of the position groups, plus the coaches, as people who have to take the blame.

“We all had a hand in it: coaches, quarterbacks, offensive line, running backs, sometimes it’s a quarterback handing the ball off when he should pull it. Sometimes it’s a quarterback got confused on coverage. The interception on the second half, we can talk about throwing the ball a little high over AB’s head but the ball should have been thrown to the slant down on the boundary,” Beamer said.

“The offensive line certainly had their hand in a lot of it. We didn’t do a great job handling their movement. Running back wise, we missed a couple blitz pickups or stayed in to protect when we didn’t need to. Receiver-wise we had some sloppy routes. Receiver-wise we got our butts kicked on the perimeter blocking. Tight end-wise we had some sloppy routes and got our butts kicked on the perimeter. We all had a hand in it.”
