Report: Maalik Murphy adds South Carolina to list of planned visits
Former Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy is scheduled to visit South Carolina in the upcoming days, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Thamel also reported Murphy is set to visit Duke and Oregon State this weekend. According to a report from Greg Biggins, Murphy also intends to visit Baylor.
Murphy made seven appearances in 2023, including two starts after QB1 Quinn Ewers suffered an injury. In that time, he completed 40 of 71 passes for 477 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.
After entering the portal, Murphy came in as the No. 36 overall transfer and the No. 11-ranked quarterback to hit the open market, according to the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings.
Murphy told Thamel the timing didn’t allow him to be with the team for the Sugar Bowl against Washington, but he’s now gearing up for his next steps.
“It’s nothing against Texas at all,” Murphy told Thamel. “I’m doing this purely for me and my future. In my eyes, I’ll always be a Longhorn and a part of this great team.”
As a recruit, he was the No. 205 overall prospect in the 2022 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also ranked as the nation’s No. 12 quarterback and the No. 15 recruit in California.
