Shane Beamer assesses Spencer Rattler's performance early in fall camp
After dealing with a depleted quarterback room in 2021, South Carolina is in line for another jump in 2022 with Spencer Rattler likely leading the offense. Rattler left Oklahoma this offseason and eventually joined the Gamecocks out of the transfer portal.
Early on in his first fall at South Carolina, Rattler has impressed Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer. Beamer noted that Rattler has some areas to improve on, but he was overall impressed with his performance in this weekend’s scrimmage.
“Spencer I thought was good, he made some really good throws,” Beamer said after South Carolina’s scrimmage. “I think sometimes he’s got to get rid of the ball quicker. He knew he wasn’t going to get hit, but I told him out there, I mean there were some times that he would have gotten hit pretty good out there today. So he’s got to continue to get rid of the ball better. But understanding the offense, leading the offense, understanding what we’re trying to get done, communicating that to the other ten guys.”
Beamer liked how Rattler led the offense in South Carolina’s first scrimmage
Rattler was on everyone’s radar last season as a possible candidate to take home the Heisman Trophy. Instead, he struggled to begin the year and was eventually benched at Oklahoma. Now, he wants to come back and prove what he is capable of.

In Saturday’s scrimmage, Beamer thought that Rattler did a good job leading South Carolina’s offense down the field, even without some key contributors on the field next to him.
“Did a great job the very first drive, I mean he took the offense right down the field,” said Beamer. “Everything we do is first group, ones versus ones. So we don’t do anything against first offense versus second defense or any of that. So when we’re out there it’s our starting offense, first group against the first defense always. He came out and took that first offense right down the field and then ended the drive with a stop where we had to kick a field goal and then the second drive I think they came out there and it was a field goal.
“So we’ve got to do better at sustaining drives, but I thought he did a nice job of at least managing the offense and taking them down the field without our top two running backs with Josh Vann not playing. We certainly had some guys out. But like where Spencer is right now. And the thing with Spencer as we get closer and closer to game week is narrowing down what we’re doing each week and getting dialed in from that standpoint.”
