Shane Beamer hopes to decide on a starting quarterback 'fairly soon'
Two guys are left in the South Carolina quarterback competition. LaNorris Sellers and Robby Ashford are who head coach Shane Beamer will decide between but as of Monday, no decision has been made. Even with preseason camp nearly completed in Columbia, the Gamecocks do not have their guy quite yet.
Beamer gave an update on when a decision could come, not giving a specific time. “Fairly soon” was the best he could offer when speaking on Gojo and Golic. South Carolina is now under two weeks before the season opener against Old Dominion.
“Fairly soon,” Beamer said on a decision. “We’ve gotten through preseason. Today, as we do this on Monday, is an off day for our players. And then Tuesday, we come back in and get ready for practice. So, here fairly soon… I want to get one and everyone rally around that guy.”
Sellers and Ashford are players Beamer is confident in. Bringing a similar style of play likely makes the decision a bit tougher, with both guys having the ability to use their feet. Ashford showed us as such while playing at Auburn before transferring in. While on the Plains, 199 rushing attempts resulted in 927 yards and 12 touchdowns, most which game during the 2022 season.
As for Sellers, he is in his second season with the Gamecocks. But from the moment he committed to the program, his dual-threat ability was praised. The spring game was a great example. Sellers rushed one in for a touchdown from 13 yards away, not too common when a non-contact jersey is on.

While Beamer does want to choose somebody and have the team “rally around” the guy, there is still a good chance both quarterbacks get on the field. Beamer views the duo as talented and believes they can with South Carolina games.
“Both of those guys have been working with the first group,” Beamer said. “I would anticipate seeing both of them as we get into the season because they’re all talented guys and can bring something to the position.”
South Carolina opens against Old Dominion before getting straight into SEC play in Week 2. A road trip to Kentucky occurs before LSU comes to town the following Saturday. Two critical games for the Gamecocks, having a consistent quarterback will be key for Beamer.
