Shane Beamer reacts to South Carolina's dominant win over SC State
It wasn’t the week South Carolina envisioned with two less days to prepare for a matchup against SC State, but the Gamecocks dominated en route to a victory. Afterward, Shane Beamer opened up about what the unique week was like.
South Carolina opted to move the game from Saturday to Thursday as Hurricane Ian was closing in on the United States. That meant Beamer’s group had two less days to prepare, and they proved they could handle it with a 50-10 victory at Williams-Brice Stadium.
During his postgame interview, he said the players responded well.

“I was proud of them,” Beamer told SEC Network’s Alyssa Lang. “They handled the week well. Not normal, obviously, and a quick turnaround. Didn’t always play pretty tonight, but responded at the right times tonight. We’ve got to get the penalties on defense cleaned up and some of the turnovers on offense cleaned up. But for the most part, I was really, really proud of them.”
Quarterback Spencer Rattler had a strong performance, as well, throwing for 212 yards and two touchdowns on 21-of-27 passing. He also found one of his former Oklahoma teammates, tight end Austin Stogner, for a touchdown the first time this year.
It was quite the bounce-back game for Rattler after two straight games of less than 200 passing yards. Beamer pointed to one big difference he saw in his QB1 Thursday night.

“I think he’s just having fun,” Beamer said. “He’s got playmakers around him and eh’s getting more and more comfortable around this team. … His teammates love him and respect him. Happy for him to get up here tonight and have some success.”
Next week, things get much tougher for South Carolina. The Gamecocks will hit the road to take on Kentucky and the high-powered Wildcats offense. Beamer knows the challenge at hand, though, and said his group has to improve despite the 40-point win.
“Obviously, we’re playing a great team up in Lexington next week and they’re explosive on offense,” Beamer said. “We’ve got to be better. The thing for us is to just continue to get better each week. We’ve got talented guys on defense, we’re playing a lot of talented freshmen right now. We just need them to continue to hurry up and grow up.”
