After two seasons as South Carolina’s offensive coordinator, Dowell Loggains became the next head coach, the first such opportunity of his coaching career, at Appalachian State this weekend.

During a press conference on Sunday, Shane Beamer addressed the loss of Loggains on the Gamecocks’ staff but expressed his and their excitement for him having earned that job three and half hours up north with the Mountaineers.

“Looking back to yesterday, excited for Dowell. Great compliment to him, a testament to him,” said Beamer. “Fired up for him and Beth to get the opportunity to go to a great program up in Boone and become a head coach.”

“He would be the first to tell you that it’s a credit to the players and staff here at Carolina,” Beamer said. “He’s worked really, really hard for the opportunity.”

During his two years calling the offense in Columbia, South Carolina averaged 28.8 ppg. with 386.2 yards. They improved comparatively from his first to his second season with a more balanced attack this fall as they went from 26 ppg. with 363.1 yards in 2023 to 31.6 ppg., which was 42nd nationally, and 409.3 yards in 2024. That included quality quarterback play in both seasons with Spencer Rattler and LaNorris Sellers.

With that, Beamer wasn’t surprised to see Loggains be a candidate during this coaching carousel. He just wanted to see him take the right opportunity for him if he chose one, which they both think he eventually did with App State.

“Like I told him, based on the way that we played offensively at the end of the season, LaNorris as a quarterback? There were going to be other opportunities for him. Don’t just take the first one. Make sure it’s the right one,” Beamer said. “He went up to Boone and spent the night a couple of nights ago. He called me yesterday and, you know, told me that he really felt it was the right one and that this was direction that he was going.”

Loggains has had several roles over the past two decades, specifically in the pros but with the last four being in college. Now, he’s finally earned his own team with Beamer showing his support from here for the now former coordinator for South Carolina

“Wish him well, for sure,” Beamer said.
