Shane Beamer reflects on singing and dancing in locker room for wife's birthday, reveals response
Shane Beamer had a plan: Win against Texas A&M on Saturday night, then serenade his wife, Emily, in the locker room after the game. In on the plan? The entire South Carolina football roster.
So after South Carolina bulldozed Texas A&M, 44-20, on Saturday night, Beamer and his players were ready to sing their song of choice: “When I See U” by Fantasia. While the tune got a bit lost, the energy of the group more than made up for it.
And Beamer’s whole reason for the scene? Emily’s birthday was coming up.
“It was enthusiastic, that’s for sure,” Beamer said on the SEC coaches teleconference on Wednesday. “Thankfully the team had my back. So they had me surrounded so I didn’t have too much space to be able to operate, Steve. It was more singing and more singing than it was a dance. But a lot of fun and that’s what it’s all about.”
Beamer continued, waxing poetic about how the scene is representative of the best of college football.

He also said the reach of the video was thoroughly unexpected. It got so much traction that Fantasia actually filmed brief video to the Beamers, along with sending flowers.
“But a lot of fun and that’s what it’s all about,” Beamer said. “To have postgame locker rooms like that and celebrate with your teammates and wish your wife a happy birthday and things like that. So it’s been — the response or the impact that that moment or video has had has been pretty remarkable, to be honest with you. Just the number of people that have reached out, whether it be other college football coaches or people in the NFL or recruits or recruits parents that have reached out to me. Fantasia delivered flowers in a video to me, or to the office yesterday. So it’s been pretty cool.”
And with the standard that he’s now set, Beamer is going to have a hard time exceeding the celebration when it comes time to celebrate Emily’s birthday next year.
