Shane Beamer reveals how Nyck Harbor has balanced track schedule, spring football
South Carolina wide receiver Nyck Harbor flashed plenty of potential in 2023 to get Gamecock fans and head coach Shane Beamer excited about his future with the football program. He’s also a multi-sport athlete, competing on the track during the spring.
It can be difficult for athletes to balance multiple sports, especially with spring football occurring concurrently with track. It’s a schedule that Beamer recently explained how Harbor is working to balance and develop chemistry with the offense.
“Yeah, I believe so in regards to he and LaNorris [Sellers] and guys being able to do stuff on their own,” Shane Beamer said. “He and Coach [Mike] Furrey being able to do kind of stuff on their own within the rules and whatever Nyck wants to do. But, when class isn’t conflicting with his schedule, he’s here.”
Nyck Harbor came to South Carolina as a five-star recruit in the Class of 2023, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He was also the top-ranked athlete in that cycle.
In 2023, as a freshman, Nyck Harbor played in 12 games for South Carolina. He had 12 receptions for 195 yards and a touchdown during the season. On top of that, Harbor also carried the ball twice. Within that season, he flashed his exciting potential moving forward.

“So, obviously the weekends, I think the last two weekends, they’ve had track meets. I think they were in Florida and the weekend before they were here. So, he hasn’t been around on Saturdays. We weren’t here this Saturday, but he hasn’t really been around on the weekends. And then Monday, Wednesday, Friday are days that we meet and lift as well for the morning. So he’s working around his class schedule on that, but it works out pretty good for the practice days. He was here today as well and he’s adamant about being a great football player,” Beamer said.
“And it’s not like when he’s here, ‘Oh my God, Nyck’s in the building’ and all that. It’s just what you kind of expect. And walking in, there he is, sitting in the front row in the team meeting or second row in the team meeting right in the middle and involved.”
South Carolina’s Garnet & Black Spring Game is currently scheduled for April 20th at 7 p.m. That same day, South Carolina Track and Field is hosting the USC Open.
“So, he wants to give his all to track and be the very best he can be there for those guys,” Beamer said. “But then he also wants to be his very best for football and give everything he can to football also.”
