Shane Beamer’s team has had to look themselves in the mirror early in the season. While they now have three wins after last night’s 50-10 win over South Carolina State, they’re already 0-2 in SEC play with losses to Arkansas and Georgia. Even so, Beamer says the pair of losses hasn’t taken away South Carolina’s spirit.

Beamer spoke highly of his team’s resolve after their win on Thursday night over the Bulldogs. He said they’ve continued to be resilient and haven’t carried the weight of the defeats into practice.

“They’re a resilient group. Love to practice. They’re a fun group to be around, they really are,” said Beamer. “We’ve dealt with a lot of adversity already this season just with injuries and things like that but they haven’t gone out to the practice field where you’ve gotta motivate them to practice. They really enjoy being around each other.”

Against Georgia State, Charlotte, and South Carolina State, the Gamecocks have won by a combined score of 141-44. SEC play hasn’t gone well for them, though, as they lost to the Razorbacks and Bulldogs by a combined score of 92-37. They hung around with the Hogs in Fayetteville the second week of the season. However, the loss to No. 1 Georgia was a tough pill to swallow in Columbia.

Beamer now wants to his team use those two losses as fuel. He hopes it teaches them to come together off the field so that they can be better on it.

“We’ve talked the last couple weeks that we need to forget about the football stuff. We need to get closer as a football team, more connected. And I feel like we have,” Beamer said. “It’s a fun group to be around, they love the work and we need to continue to get better.”

If conference play is their problem, it’s not about to get any easier. They open their real SEC slate next weekend on the road against Kentucky before facing Texas A&M, Florida, and Tennessee too. That’s not to mention their end-of-season date with Clemson. With that said, South Carolina will want to get on the board in SEC play after being taken down twice already. Uniting during their extra bit of rest this week will determine a lot in how the rest of 2022 goes for the Gamecocks.
