Shane Beamer isn’t the type of coach who looms over his offensive coordinator’s play-calling. He trusts South Carolina OC Marcus Satterfield. Now, of course, there is plenty of dialogue and planning between the two. The process of building how the playbook and specific game plans from week to week requires the whole offensive staff and the head coach. So while Beamer doesn’t call Satterfield’s plays for him, the two generally know what to call at which moments throughout the game. A credit to extensive research and preparation throughout the week prior.

At a recent press conference, Shane Beamer was asked about that dynamic with his coaching staff. How much say he has in play-calling and how much a part of the plan Beamer’s own suggestions are.

“I’d say uh pretty regularly,” the Gamecock head coach answered after being asked how much dialogue he and the staff have over play-calling. “I mean, you know, during the week, on Monday nights, me and Satt and Clayton, I meet with Pete every day, and…here’s the plan and here’s how we’re gonna try and win this game. But then on Monday night, Tuesday night and Wednesday night, Satt and Clayton and I always sit down and just kind of talk about…okay early in the week, here’s what we think, here’s how we best can attack these guys. And Tuesday night we talk about the third down plan. Wednesday night we talk about the red zone plan. So we’re always communicating as well.”

So plenty of back and forth between the head coach and his top offensive assistant. However, Beamer says he doesn’t get too specific when expressing his goals for play-calling strategy.

“I don’t know how often I’ve been that specific about running the ball 40 times, but I don’t think Satt needed me to tell him that. It wasn’t like he was Dawn Coryell or somebody — look that one up for all you young guys — out there trying to throw the ball 60 times. I mean, he wants to run the ball as well. We all do, and knew it would help Spencer and help our entire offense if we could just get this run game going. And, you know, I believe in running the football and so does our offense and offensive staff.”

So after some struggles the first few weeks in the pass game, Beamer does want to see a larger commitment to running the football.
