Shane Beamer shares message from SEC coach on LaNorris Sellers: ‘You’ve got freaking Superman’
South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers was named the SEC Freshman Player of the Week after helping lead the Gamecocks to a 44-20 win over Texas A&M last weekend. Sellers posted the best single performance of his young career with an impressive day through the air and the ground.
Sellers imposed his will on several Texas A&M defenders on Saturday, highlighted by running one over in the second quarter near the South Carolina sideline to convert a third down. It was a moment that Shane Beamer was impressed but not surprised by.
“The first reaction was probably like everybody else, words I probably can’t repeat in a press conference when I saw him coming over there,” Beamer said on Tuesday. “Because we know what kind of defense Texas A&M has as well. So when I saw that, wow would be the best way to put it as well. Certainly brought a lot of energy and excitement to our sideline when he did that, that was really awesome to see.”
Sellers threw for a career-high 244 yards with two touchdowns last Saturday. But his ability to extend and make plays with his legs may have been the most impressive part of his game. Also rushing for a career-high 106 yards and a score on the ground as a 6-foot-3, 240-pound weapon on offense.
“What allows him to do that, just how strong he is … That guy’s a freak in the weight room, just how strong he is. I mean look at his lower body,” Beamer added. “I was texting with a with another SEC head coach, texted me on Sunday morning about him and he said, ‘You got freaking Superman back there playing quarterback, just how strong and fast he is.’ And he is, he works really, really hard in the weight room, he’s a naturally strong guy.”

Superman definitely put his cape on last Saturday, but according to Beamer, he’s been showing off his powers for quite some time in Columbia. That includes a 36-yard touchdown rush against Vanderbilt last season and other moments in practice during his redshirt freshman year.
“We had a scrimmage where he was fresh out of high school and we made him live where you could tackle the quarterback. And there was a play over there on the near sideline, over here by the building, and he fought for extra yardage on a run and our defense was trying to tackle him. And guys bouncing off of him, and he’s carrying guys, and things like that,” Beamer reflected.
“And that was very much a moment early in his time here at South Carolina where I remember thinking this guy’s different and is going to be a real problem for teams trying to tackle this guy.”
Beamer’s thoughts were clearly right, as the abilities of his young quarterback have been fully on display this season, with room to continue growing. Making South Carolina’s present and future exciting to watch at the quarterback position with Sellers under center.
