South Carolina‘s quarterback competition will come down to redshirt freshman LaNorris Sellers and Auburn transfer Robby Ashford. However, 14 practices into fall camp — Beamer still isn’t ready to name a starting quarterback.

After the Gamecocks’ scrimmage on Saturday, head coach Shane Beamer provided an update on where the battle stands and when he thinks he’ll be ready to officially release the quarterback depth chart.

“I thought both those guys, including Davis Beville, he did some good stuff today for us and came in and made some nice throws and did some good things,” Beamer said. “Robby and LaNorris took the bulk of the reps with the first couple of groups and thought they both flashed and did some good things in the run game and the passing game particularly. We’re not running the quarterback in scrimmage, but some scramble situations where they broke out of there. I thought they showed what a weapon they can be when things do break down.

“We’ll look at the tape and then get in next week and kind of see where we are. But I do know we have more than one quarterback that we can win football games with.”

Sellers has played sparingly during his true freshman season, playing in just three games to preserve his redshirt.

During his short time on the field, he completed all four of his passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns during a September blowout against Furman before being held out until November when he was used as a rushing threat in wins against Kentucky and Vanderbilt, respectively. He tallied five carries for 51 yards and a touchdown on the round, most of which came against the Commodores.

For Ashford, he played sparingly at quarterback in 2023. He finished 14 of 27 passing for 145 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions but was used mainly as a rushing threat, also adding 217 yards and five touchdowns rushing.

Before that, the former Auburn Tiger went 123 of 250 passing in 2022 for 1,613 yards, with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also ran for 710 yards and seven scores.

“All of those guys would like to have plays on film that they could have back over the last 14 practices that we’ve had,” Beamer said. “We certainly like the group, and we are all about competition and the love to compete. And those guys have done a great job of competing and pushing each other, and they will continue to, no matter what. No matter who goes out there for the first play against Old Dominion in two weeks.”
