Shane Beamer does not want complacency with South Carolina wrapping up spring practice this month. The Gamecocks head coach wants constant improvement before the break.

He noted 10 practices in, it’s natural for players and coaches to feel like they accomplished a lot. From that point on, they can coast.

If that’s avoided, South Carolina can go into the summer with plenty of confidence for fall ball.

“Just how we continue to progress and get better,” Beamer said of what he’s evaluating towards the end of spring. “That’s what I talked to the team about last night after practice, like the human nature is okay, ‘we’re 10 practices down. Next week, the last week of spring break. We got Easter weekend coming up.’ Human nature is to go ‘Alright, we’re good and just kind of coast’ and I talked to the team about this today. I went back and like this week last year, we didn’t do a great job academically, we didn’t do a great job keeping the locker room clean, a lot of things like that were maybe last year we took a breath and didn’t get better.”

Beamer, like all coaches, uses spring practice to work out the kinks. But that doesn’t mean teams should be satisfied.

“That’s what I’m looking for, is how we continue to get better, players, coaches, all of us,” Beamer said. “Every single person in this building. There’s no complacency and there might not be any complacency after 10 practices. With one week of spring practice left we got a lot of work to do.”

Beamer hammered down the point of improvement in spring practice. But he also mentioned the young guys have to play their part and push the veterans on the football team.

“I want to see how we continue to progress and get better (in spring practice),” Beamer said. “And then also, you know, some of these older guys, do they continue to take a step and improve or do they get caught by some of these young guys? (If you’ve been around me) long enough to know that, you know, there’s no jobs that are given here right now.

“You earn and compete for everything and if anybody’s getting complacent and thinks they’ve got a job locked up, they’re gonna be shocked here pretty quickly. I want to see these young guys continue to come along and push these older guys.”
