Shane Beamer addresses potential for quarterback change

The South Carolina Gamecocks offense struggled against the dominant Georgia Bulldogs defense, which led to some interesting questions during the team’s postgame press conference. One of the questions posed to Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer was whether or not its time to make a change at quarterback following the loss.

“I think Spencer will tell you he’s gotta play better,” said Beamer. “The interception to Juju, they did a good job of covering. Similar play that they hit us on later in the game to their running back. You gotta throw it out of bounds. He was trying to throw a back shoulder there, which we don’t need to be throwing a back shoulder fade on that route. Everything that we do, we evaluate after every game we compete. And there’s a lot of us that have to coach better and play better.”

Rattler struggled all day against the Bulldogs’ defense. He finished the day going 13-25 for just 118 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. One of his interceptions came early in the first quarter when the Gamecocks had a chance to even the score at seven. Deep inside the Bulldogs’ territory, Rattler attempted a pass to running back Juju McDowell that was picked off by freshman defensive back Malachi Starks. This interception was a head-scratcher to most looking on, given the tight coverage on McDowell on the play.

Despite Rattler’s struggles in Saturday’s game, beamer has no interest in handing the reins of the offense over to someone else.

“To answer your question, Spencer’s our quarterback. We gotta play better. There’s no doubt about it. Play and coach better, not just Spencer. All of us on this football team.”

Beamer fires back at reporter over question about team giving up

South Carolina was outmatched at home on Saturday against the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia dismantled South Carolina 48-7, giving up the shutout victory late in the fourth quarter courtesy of a Luke Doty touchdown pass. After a lopsided loss like that, you would think that a dark cloud of despair loomed over the Gamecocks locker room. Nope. According to head coach Shane Beamer, there is no such feeling following the loss.

“Hell no. What kind of question is that?” Beamer exclaimed when asked if there was a sense of giving up in the locker room after the game. “We’re 1-2. We got a bunch of fighters in that room. And give up; that’s not a part of this football program. Get out of here, man”

Beamer is attempting to resurrect the Gamecocks football program. And despite the score on the scoreboard, the team kept fighting much of the game. South Carolina may have a few steps along the way until they are on the level of their SEC East adversary on Saturday, but that does not mean that they have plans on giving up. And it doesn’t appear as if beamer has plans of laying down and giving up this season despite the 1-2 start.
