LOOK: South Carolina unveils garnet throwback uniforms
The South Carolina Gamecocks, now 3-1, prepare to host Wofford on Nov. 23, and the Gamecocks will do so in style.
South Carolina is coming off a close, 66-63 loss to the UAB Blazers but have time to recover ahead of its next matchup. When the Gamecocks next take the court, they will be sporting brand-new alternate uniforms, a retro garnet look that the school designed specifically for the basketball program.
The Gamecocks, led by Frank Martin, released a video on Twitter Thursday detailing the reveal of the new uniforms.
“Y’all know that little hang out spot in front of the coach’s office?” a voice says. “We’ve got something for y’all in there.”
The South Carolina basketball team then starts walking toward Martin’s office in the video, only to see the new uniforms draped over the seats.
The throwback uniforms feature a garnet top and garnet bottom, with a simple white and black stripe going across the collar and a white stripe across the waist. Then, in all-caps, white block lettering, it shows a simple “South Carolina,” meant to pay homage to vintage uniforms. The shorts are a bit more complex; there are white triangles facing different directions on the leg, making almost an argyle pattern.
The video begins to tint into a more retro look, as South Carolina reveals the history behind the uniforms.

South Carolina suffers upset to start the season
South Carolina may be 3-1 to start the campaign, but the Gamecocks suffered a brutal loss in just the second game of the season, losing in shocking upset fashion to Princeton.
In the opening round of the Asheville Championship, South Carolina allowed Jaelen Llewellyn to score 16 points in a loss to Princeton. Guard Jermaine Couisnard made a three-point shot to bring the Gamecocks within three, the Gamecocks trailing just 65-62. However, shortly thereafter, an ensuing South Carolina foul saw Princeton’s Drew Friberg to put the game away.
Outside of that one upset, South Carolina has won three games — each of which the Gamecocks were heavily favored — as they defeated SC Upstate, Western Kentucky and UAB.
Through four games, Couisnard leads all scorers, averaging nearly 16 points in 26.3 minutes per game, while adding five rebounds and three assists to his total. The Gamecocks have two more double-digit scorers in Wildens Leveque, a forward averaging 11.3 points and 9.7 rebounds, and Erik Stevenson, a guard averaging 10 points, 5.7 rebounds, two assists and 3.3 steals per game.
