Devonni Reed details his acclimation to South Carolina so far
After spending the first four years of his collegiate career at Central Michigan, Devonni Reed is using his last year of eligibility to play for Shane Beamer at South Carolina. The veteran defensive back has already carved out a role in the Gamecocks’ defensive rotation. On the outside, looking in, it seems like Reed had a smooth transition from one program to the other. During a recent interview, he detailed his acclimation to South Carolina and who helped him with it.
“Oh, I’m very comfy, very comfy. When I first got here and learned the new defense,” said Reed. “But now, as I’ve been here for about five to six months, I’m playing way faster. I’m able to read my keys way faster, to think ahead, and make my checks faster. I’m more confident and be more louder on the field, and able to lead the defense as well. And to just communicate to the other side and to my side as well.
It’s been easy ever since I got here. Because, starting off with RJ, he welcomed me with open arms like I was his brother. And then, next thing you know, the rest of the DB group brought me in with open arms, and it felt like a family. So, I’ve been comfy with them since day one. When I stepped out on the field, it felt like I’ve been playing with these guys for about two-three years.
Reed joins the Gamecocks after having his most productive season with the Chippewas. Last year the Detroit, MI, native recorded 72 total tackles, 43 solo, six passes deflected, two interceptions, and a sack.

But, when that didn’t happen he opted to return somewhere very familiar. He’s currently helped the Gamecocks defensively, waiting for his next opportunity and helping the program he played for.
“I think, technically—well not technically, but legally—the role he is, he’s not necessarily coaching. But he’s involved with us around the program and is an asset for sure, for all the obvious reasons,” Beamer said. “He’s great with those young defensive backs and all the guys.”
Foster, a former walk-on at Gardner-Webb transferred to South Carolina in 2018.
He had a nice season in 2020, but came into his own as a super senior in 2021. In 13 games, he led the Gamecocks in tackles (72) and interceptions (5). He ended the year an All-American and All-SEC defensive back.
