The South Carolina Gamecocks held their first live scrimmage this weekend, as fall camp continues to ramps up in Columbia. There were definitely some familiar faces that didn’t participate in the team’s scrimmage due to injury, and head coach Shane Beamer gave an update on the status of those players.

“Injury wise some guys that we did hold out today;  MarShawn Lloyd, Christian Beal-Smith, Josh Vann, Corey Rucker, Sherrod Greene, and Landon Samson. Those guys are the only real new ones, you guys have been out there and kind of seen who hasn’t been going, but those were some guys that didn’t scrimmage today. None of those are long term issues at all, most of them will be back Monday,” Beamer said.

It’s unsettling to hear that so many of the key offense weapons for this upcoming season are out with injury at the moment, but Beamer is confident that many of them will be back at practice as soon as Monday, and that no other new, serious injuries arose during the scrimmage for the players that did participate.

“We’re off tomorrow, we don’t practice, but Monday morning is our next practice, I would imagine most of those guys would be back. A couple of them may go in the middle of next week, but nothing long term from those guys. It was a physical, physical day out there for sure. We had some guys out there that got banged up out there that just got to check on their status with Clint in the training room later on, but hopefully nothing long term with anyone. I don’t think it will be,” Beamer said.

Beamer is hoping to get his team fully healthy and back to practice to finish out camp soon, and enter their opening game against Georgia State September 3 with a fully healthy roster.

Shane Beamer reveals the keys to South Carolina’s program

NIL and the transfer portal have been hot topics of conversation in the college football landscape this year, and at SEC media days this week many coaches gave varying opinions and takes on these matters. This didn’t exclude South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer, who has been known to embrace these nuances of college sports. Beamer was asked how he balances embracing these nuances and the “Twitter aspect” of college football today, while also making sure his players meet their expectations on the practice and game field.

“For me, it’s just be me you know? I think sometimes guys become a head coach and there’s a certain way you think you’re supposed to act because you’re a head coach in the SEC and I was never going to try to be somebody I’m not,” Beamer said. “And I meant what I said, it’s not easy being a football player in our program, and our players would tell you, we work really really hard and they are held accountable and we are very demanding, but we’re not disrespectful, we’re coaching them hard on the football field but we’re not disrespectful, they know that we genuinely care about them.”

Beamer could be referring to the viral video that South Carolina’s Twitter account posted of him yesterday in a backwards hat and sunglasses signing and dancing to Soulja Boy song Turn My Swag On, which every SEC coach definitely isn’t doing. Beamer discussed how love within the program is an important element to what they have going on in Columbia.

“We use the word love in our program a lot, and sometimes that may make people uncomfortable, not with us, we use the word love in our program a lot and have no problem telling each other that we love each other and that helps us grow together as a team and the more that we can showcase our program,” Beamer said. “There’s some great things going on in our program, there’s some great people in our program and being able to highlight them on social media like we’ve been able to do, I want to for sure.”
