Shane Beamer reveals what has changed offensively from last year to now
The South Carolina Gamecocks surprised many last year by finishing the season 7-6; including a Duke’s Mayo Bowl victory over rival North Carolina. This year the Gamecocks plan to build on that momentum and thrust themselves higher up the hierarchy in the SEC. One of the ways this will be possible is with a more efficient offense; something head coach Shane Beamer has been working on feverishly this offseason. And with his new and improved offense comes a few changes.
During a recent press conference, Beamer revealed what has changed for the Gamecocks’ offense from last year to now.
“I think the biggest thing is the overall understanding of what we’re doing and being able to go out there and be efficient and operate,” said Beamer. “Last year, at this time, it was still very new for these guys. We’ve been through spring practice in the summertime, but it was still a new system. This year, it’s year two in this system, and we’ve been able to tweak some things to better fit our personnel because we have a better understanding of our personnel. Our players have a better understanding of us as coaches. So that’s the biggest thing I see.”
Beamer wants players to know the play from every position
For Beamer, the expectation is for his players to be multifaceted. He wants them to understand the playbook, not just from their position but from any position on the field. And from his continued statement, it seems like one player, in particular, has picked up on that for his head coach.

“…With the returning guys, they know how to get lined up. And they don’t just know their position. They have a better understanding of the whole play, the whole concept. So, Jaheim Bell, last year, could line up at tight end and know what to tight end does. Now we want to be so multiple in personnel that Jaheim could line up at running back, tight end, and receiver and know what to do on the same play.
With the incumbent players getting a second season to get themselves fully acclimated to Beamer’s offense and the acquisition of top talent out of the transfer portal like quarterback Spencer Rattler, the Gamecocks’ offense looks to be much improved from last year. And With his players expected to be multi-facetted on offense, Beamer and South Carolina could set up the college football world for yet another shocking season.
