Spencer Rattler reveals what he's individually worked on during preseason camp
Spencer Rattler‘s much-anticipated South Carolina debut is mere days away, and learning a completely new offense under head coach Shane Beamer has been a challenge. Still, it’s nothing the Oklahoma transfer can’t handle.
“Getting all those small things down about the offense, about the game,” Rattler said. “Wanting to improve on every aspect of your game, especially at the quarterback position, but really just working on my feet, speeding everything up, eliminating mistakes and all that makes a great quarterback, so I’m excited to get out there and play.”

The only time Gamecock fans have been able to snag a glimpse of Rattler in action was back during April’s spring game. Rattler finished the spring contest 8-for-10 passing for 79 yards, while also running the ball twice for 12 yards. After the game, Rattler said he felt he played well but feels he could improve his chemistry with some of his receivers on the field, but off — he couldn’t feel more at home.
Rattler, a former five-star recruit and the No. 1 quarterback in the 2019 class according to On3 Consensus, played under current Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer for two seasons with the Sooners in 2019 and 2020. After helping lead the Sooners to a Big 12 Championship and Cotton Bowl victory in 2020, Rattler returned to lead the offense in 2021 with Beamer departing to South Carolina for his first head coaching job.

Now, the two have reunited and are expected to be a force in the SEC East, even if it may only be for one season, as Rattler is expected to be a sought after quarterback in next year’s NFL Draft. Still, Rattler can only control what’s in front of him — and on Saturday, that’ll be in front of thousands of Gamecock faithful inside Williams-Brice Stadium.
“I’m just excited to see all the fans out there, hear 2001 play, Sandstorm, all of that,” Rattler said in a press conference Tuesday. “I am excited for it. Running out of the tunnel with my team and the coaches. Hopefully get the anxiety out of the way. Anxious anxiety and just fun, ready to go vibes. Not nervous, just excited. It is going to be fun.”
Rattler’s Gamecock debut against Georgia State is slated for this coming Saturday and 7:30 p.m. ET live on SEC Network+ and ESPN+.
