South Carolina tight end Chad Terrell has suffered a torn ACL, head coach Shane Beamer announced on Tuesday. The sixth-year senior has battled through injuries in the past, making this injury the third torn ACL of his career. Now, Terrell will miss the entire 2022 season.

Beamer expressed how upset he was for Terrell, speaking on the role he was going to have for South Carolina this season. Recently moving to tight end, Terrell “put himself in position” to see the field this season according to Beamer. Now with an injury, he will have to contribute off-the-field for the Gamecocks.

“Chad Terrell tore his ACL,” Beamer said. “That’s his third unfortunately in his career. So he’ll be out for the season. Really, really hate it for that young man. And we told the team he’ll still continue to have a role on this team. I’ve got a lot of respect for him, a guy that’s in his sixth year in this program. This is now his third ACL, been back from two ACLs, accepted a position change during spring practice, really excelled in that role as a tight end role.

“Had a good preseason and had put himself in a position to play and have a role on the field on this year’s team. Certainly hate it for him but have so much respect for Chad and the way he’s battled to put himself in a position to play. And we talked about it in front of the team, the respect we have for him and the impact he can have going forward. The fighter that he is and all that as well. So he’s still heavily involved with our team and has a role without a doubt, just won’t be playing on Saturdays for us this upcoming season.”

More on Chad Terrell, ACL tears

Terell began his career at South Carolina in 2017, originally playing wide receiver. His ACL tears occurred during his sophomore (2018) and redshirt sophomore seasons (2020), with both occurring during their respective spring practices.

When on the field, Terrell has appeared in 25 games for the Gamecocks. He has seven career receptions going for 76 yards but has not been able to get into the endzone. A switch to tight end was expected to get Terrell more involved in the offense during the 2022 season.
