Year One for Shane Beamer at South Carolina overall was disappointing, finishing with a 6-6 regular-season record. However, a bowl win over North Carolina to close out the season has seen momentum carry into 2022, with the Gamecocks just a few months away from their opening matchup.

Changes to the coaching staff could have been made but Beamer decided to stay put. At the end of the day, he’s only been in Columbia for one season and one 7-6 season should not change the faith he has in his assistant coaches.

Beamer doubled down on his decision to keep things the way they were, saying he is confident in what they are building for the 2023 season.

“I will always do what’s best for the South Carolina football program, and if I felt like making changes was the best thing for us last year, I certainly would have done it,” Beamer said. “But I didn’t. I wasn’t going to be swayed by public opinion. I’m in the foxhole with those guys each day, in the building with them day in and day out, and I know what’s being said in those meetings and know what’s being taught on the football field.

“Now, don’t get me wrong. We’ve got to be better this season in all three phases, head coaching included. But I was confident then and confident now that we have the staff in place to get where we want to go.”

Shane Beamer on doing the little things at South Carolina

South Carolina is Beamer’s first opportunity to be a head coach, previously being an assistant at programs such as Georgia, Mississippi State, Tennessee, and Oklahoma. Being the headman comes with a load of different responsibilities, something Beamer seems to be enjoying.

Beamer talked about all of the little things with running the Gamecocks program. He said learning from his father, Frank, helped prepared him for the situation.

“I like being a part of all of it,” Beamer said. “I learned last year how many things come across your desk that don’t necessarily involve football, but that doesn’t mean those things aren’t important. That’s one of the things I saw with my dad. The little things matter.”

There will be a ton of excitement for South Carolina this season with a lot of credit being handed out to Beamer’s work in the transfer portal. Quarterback Spencer Rattler highlights the bunch, as Beamer will be hoping to significantly improve in the wins and losses department in 2022.
